Much has been written about this small masterpiece by Leonardo, and the gentle woman who is its subject. Although its' history is in part uncertain, the subject is reputedly a young Florentine woman, Monna (or Mona) Lisa, who in 1495 married the well-known figure, Francesco del Giocondo, thus becoming `La Gioconda'. Probably painted between 1503 and 1505, Leonardo loved the portrait so much that he carried it with him, until it was eventually sold in France to François I.
